Have you ever come across a door in a public place not on the hinges? WELL, I DID! I came across this door at a hotel we were staying at in Florida. It tempted me to try and open it to see if the lockset was actually holding this door shut!! Looking at the picture, there is no hinge holding the top part of the door to the frame. For all I know this door could have just been laying up against the frame. This is obviously a fire code violation and a major safety issue, but think about the message this is sending to your guests…ME! Do you think we are ever staying here again? The hotel was great, but when you see little things like this it gets your mind wondering. Yes the rooms and public areas look great and are updated, but what about the fire suppression system? Is the electrical work up to code? What happens in an emergency and you have to go through more doors like this? I’d like to say it amazes me when I see things like this, but it doesn’t anymore. I’ve seen issues like this in the headquarters of major corporations, colleges, etc.

PLEASE PLEASE don’t be this company, give Queensgate Hardware a call and we can fix issues like this really fast and on budget.

As you’ve probably seen in my blogs in the past I’m on high alert when I enter the bathroom of a business. Typically it’s to see if they are in need of our help or there’s anything new that I’ve not seen before. Many times I just end up disappointed by what I see.

I’m always amazed at the lack of attention to detail that many businesses have. Everything you do in your business is a direct reflection on your brand, products and staff. Surveys show that consumers choose not to buy from companies many times when they have the best products because they don’t address all of the customers needs.

I’ll set the scene for you. These pictures were taken on a Monday morning at 9am at a VERY big national chain coffee shop. It’s a 1 person bathroom with very little floor space. It’s not a hard space to maintain, it would take a minimal amount of time. Yet here we are on a Monday morning with a dirty mirror, really dirty garbage can, even dirtier toilet top and an empty toilet cover dispenser. EVERY business should have a process for either ending the day or starting the day and it should include cleaning and stocking your restrooms. When I see this I wonder what other steps were skipped. Did they clean the coffee makers, did they check the dates on their perishables and are employees handling food correctly.

Don’t spend years building a great brand only to break it down with bad cleaning practices.

Consumers are very observant. Even more observant are parents. I happen to have a daughter who is a competitive “All Star” cheerleader. Think Cheerleading and Gymnastics combined. As you can imagine this isn’t a cheap item for parents with kids on teams. I don’t know about you, but when I pay top dollar for something I expect a certain experience. Recently I was with my son when he was invited to a Gymnastics themed Birthday party at a facility known for the type of team my daughter is on in the Cincinnati / Northern Kentucky area. The pictures here are from their Men’s room. It was disgusting. It smelled, it wasn’t clean and it was FALLING APART.

I went from thinking this place was a great place for Cheer and Gymnastics to thinking it was a dump. The way I look at it, if they can’t pay attention to these details it makes me wonder what else they are ignoring. Are they ignoring safety standards, are their coaches up to par, etc.

Moral of the story, if you think you are a Mercedes Dealership, the you better treat

your facility like that. Otherwise you’ll lose everything you’ve worked hard to build. You might have EVERYTHING else buttoned up, but a bathroom in dire need of cleaning and upkeep can destroy all of that. I went from thinking this Gymnastic facility was a great one to thinking it was a dump.

So there’s a higher-end Hibachi Steak house near my office that just recently moved and spent upwards of $1 million on their new location. The outside and inside are beautiful. They’ve added high-end granite , water features and many other nice features. BUT I was amazed at where they stopped the rehab and a their lack of attention to detail after the fact.

In this 1st picture is the ATM from the bank that was there before them. Maybe there are issues with removing it, but how hard would it be to create something to cover it. You walk into a newly remodeled building and you see a 20 year-old ATM. This to me shows a complete lack of attention to details.

In the 2nd picture you’ll see where a kid (presumably) decided to use the wall instead of the kids menu to draw on. This happens and no one can avoid this, BUT this should not be on here more than a day or two. This was going on a few weeks on my last visit.

Too many business owners overlook the details, but to consumers the details are all that matter. Especially in the restaurant business. If you’re ignoring a few minor issues like this, what else are you ignoring. Are you cleaning your kitchen properly, storing your food at the right temperature, etc. This may not be the case, but I can promise you these thoughts are going through customers minds and these same people aren’t coming back to see if it’s fixed.

This was the sign I found when going to the restroom at a local restaurant in Newport Kentucky. This was up a few days and still might be up now, I’ll check this week. I understand things break and you have to adjust but HOW long is TOO long for this to be broken? What message are you sending to your customers with signs like this?

I’d ask you to look around your business and look to see what signs you’re giving your customers. Is there an item that’s been broken for a while and has become the running joke in the office. If so, get on top of it. You might see it as a small issue, but others look at it as a sign of what else is happening in the entire business. They see this and think if you’re not paying attention to a bathroom door lock, what else are you ignoring. Thoughts about your IT security, financial stability, cleanliness standards, etc are running through their mind.

Give Queensgate Hardware & Security a call for help with any type of item like this around your facilities.

What do your customers think of you and your business? Many times what business owners think and what their customers think are polar opposite. You think that your products are great, your customer service is great, etc. While the customer might agree with both of those, they more than likely remember the TINY things that went wrong. You were a day late answering an email, you were 15 minutes late to a meeting, or as you see in this picture you cut corners.

This picture is from a large established business. While it’s not the end of the world, it does tell a story. Here’s a case where a business attempted to do the right thing. They realized the bathroom needed a coat of paint but then they cut corners. What is more surprising to me is that the owners of this company commonly use this bathroom. How can you see this and not fix it THAT DAY? To me and many other people this shows a lack of attention to details. I see this and think, are you cutting corners or ignoring details anywhere else in your business. We all work hard to build a great product and service, let’s not let a small detail like this derail all of your hard work
